Kathy Nelson Makes Retirement-Plan Gift to Continue Her Support of LSSI’s Ministry

Photo of Kathy NelsonLongtime supporter and volunteer Kathy Nelson says she has always felt a special connection to LSSI. She grew up three miles from its first program site and went to grade school with children from the Andover Lutheran Children’s Home. “I have seen many success stories of how this ministry has helped so many people,” Kathy says, “and I have known for a long time that I wanted to include LSSI in my estate planning.”

Kathy has named LSSI as a beneficiary of her retirement plan because “it was the easiest way for me to provide continuing financial support,” she says. “I’ve seen how estate gifts have helped fund programs and provide future stability through the Cornerstone Foundation.”

In the mid-1970s Kathy heard a presentation by Joanne Negstad and was inspired to become an advocate for LSSI to help others know about their programs and services. “I wanted to help others know that they are valued and that God loves and cares for them,” Kathy says.

Some of her favorite memories of LSSI are serving on the Cornerstone Foundation Board of Trustees, attending Lutheran Advocacy Day in Springfield, and helping with events—like providing Easter baskets for children in the foster care program. “I believe in the ministry of LSSI,” she says. “Once a person understands the ministry, there are many ways to get involved.”

Kathy was an administrative secretary for the John Deere Company for 35 years. She has been actively involved in politics since 2004 and currently serves on the Henry County Board. She encourages others to visit a program site or attend a community event to learn more about LSSI. “I’ve been blessed richly, and I want to help others have a better life and know God’s love and grace.”
